Apply to study at UFV as an exchange student

What you need to apply to study at UFV as an exchange student

Before you can apply to become an exchange student at UFV, you need to be nominated by your university. Ask the Study Abroad department at your institution about how to get their nomination.

How to apply to study at UFV as an exchange student

Step 1: Request a nomination from your home institution

Contact the Study Abroad coordinator at your home institution and request a nomination to study at UFV. You must be nominated by your host institution before you can begin the Study Abroad application process at UFV.

Once you have your institution’s nomination, they will submit your nomination to UFV.

Step 2: Apply to UFV

As an exchange student, you do not have to pay an application fee.

The UFV Study Abroad coordinator will provide you with instructions about how to apply to UFV. If you have any questions during the application process, you can contact the coordinator at studyabroad@ufv.ca.

Step 3: Wait for your letter of acceptance

We normally process applications within one week if they are submitted before the application deadline.

We mail printed acceptance letters that you can use to apply for your visa. We also email copies to you and your institution’s Study Abroad department.

Step 4: Apply for a visa

If you plan to study at UFV for one semester, you can come to Canada on a six-month visitor visa. If you plan to stay longer than six months and study at UFV for two or more semesters, you need to get a study permit.

We recommend that you submit your visa and study permit applications as soon as possible after you receive your letter of acceptance.

See the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for information about visa requirements and visa office locations. If your visa is delayed for any reason, you will have the option to defer your UFV studies to the following semester.

Step 5: Submit your course selection to the UFV Study Abroad coordinator

As an exchange student, you benefit from early registration. When the registration period begins, you will receive an email with a link to our course submission form. Select your courses from our list of programs available to international students.

If you need help selecting your courses or do not receive the email, contact studyabroad@ufv.ca.

Credits

You can complete up to 20 credits per semester. However, for the best exchange experience, we recommend taking 3 to 4 courses per semester. Confirm with your home Study Abroad coordinator whether your home institution has a minimum credit requirement. One UFV credit equals 1.5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

  • 100 and 200 level courses are worth 3 credits
  • 300 and 400 level courses are worth 4 credits

Step 6: Download and read the UFV pre-arrival handbook

Our pre-arrival handbook has all the information you need to prepare for a successful stay at UFV. It includes useful tips on planning for travel, finances, medical care, accommodations and more.
